WESTERN MOUNTAIN REGION
D E S I G N A W A R D S - 2 0 0 8
C A L L f o r E N T R I E S

 Objective
The Western Mountain Region Design Awards program recognizes excellence in design, planning, and construction of projects located anywhere in the world that are designed by AIA architects registered and licensed in the Western Mountain Region. Entries from multi-office firms are limited to work designed in the office located in the Western Mountain Region.

The intent of the design awards program is to honor the highest standards of design in response to user requirements, site, context, climate, and environment. Each entry, regardless of size or classification, is judged individually on the basis of total design merit.

Awards are given for honor, merit, and citation. The jury will decide the type and number of awards. Certificates will be presented to award winning AIA members in good standing, and their projects will be featured at the Spirit in Architecture Awards Banquet on October 25, 2008.

Student Awards
In a separate juried event, students from the University of New Mexico School of Architecture and Planning will meet and pick the 2008 Student Juried Awards from the entrants for the WMR Design Awards. The results will be announced on Saturday morning, October 25, 2008 during the Western Mountain Region Conference in Santa Fe.

Eligibility
All projects designed by AIA architects registered and licensed in the six states in WMR are eligible.

Firms are encouraged to re-enter projects previously submitted if they did not win an award. Projects that have received an AIA WMR award in a previous year are not eligible for the 2008 awards. However, projects that have won an un-built award can be resubmitted as a built project.

Only the “firm of record” or in its absence, the “architect of record” may submit entries for this competition. When the architect is not the sole author, all other participants substantially contributing to the design of the project must be given credit in the submittal regardless of their professional discipline.

Format
Submittals for 2008 are required to be digital and in a PC format. All images are to be submitted as JPG files in a PowerPoint presentation on a CD. The CD top face should be labeled with the entry number and project name using a permanent marker.

The PowerPoint file size for each project submitted must not exceed 20 MB. Submittals must utilize the WMR Design Awards PowerPoint format available on the WMR web site at www.aiawmr.org and the AIA New Mexico web site at www.aianewmexico.org.   AIA New Mexico Silver Medal for Lifetime Achievement Award:

Award Principles and Purpose
The American Institute of Architects, AIA New Mexico, may bestow a medal, known as the New Mexico Architects Silver Medal for Lifetime Achievement upon a New Mexico Architect who has advanced the practice of architecture and which recognizes his or her outstanding professional achievements and sense of social responsibility.

Eligibility
Architects licensed in New Mexico and who have had a distinguished career and recognition by the New Mexico architectural community, while practicing in the state, are eligible for this award. The nominee’s achievements must be viewed as an advancement of the profession and the socially responsible role that architecture must perform within the greater community. Each nominee’s work and career will be evaluated with special regard to professional and social integrity. Longevity, popularity or diligence alone does not qualify a candidate for nomination.

Nominees may be considered on the basis of notable career accomplishments. A New Mexico Architects Silver Medal for Lifetime Achievement will only be awarded to those individuals whose accomplishments have had a significant impact upon the profession of architecture and/or society.

Recipients of the New Mexico Architects Silver Medal for Lifetime Achievement must be nominated by the AIA local or state component with a nomination letter signed by the component president. Even though there is no formal application for this award, a complete curriculum vitae must be attached and submitted with the nomination letter.

Selection
All nominations are reviewed by the New Mexico Committee of AIA Fellows. The award is given to a single nominee in any one year and is awarded at the AIA New Mexico Awards Banquet.
