2009 DESIGN AWARDS
CALL FOR ENTRIES
The New Mexico Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA-NM) announces the 2009 AIA New Mexico Design Awards Program. This annual awards program encourages and recognizes distinguished architectural achievement by New Mexico architects. The program serves to increase public awareness of the outstanding services provided by architects as well as emphasize the importance of the architect’s role in shaping the quality of the built environment through design excellence.
ELIGIBILITY
Architects registered with the New Mexico Board of Architectural Examiners may enter any number of projects. New Mexico registered architects located in another state may enter any number of projects. Architecture completed outside the state of New Mexico and designed by a firm with multiple offices must be completed by the New Mexico based office to be eligible. Built work must be completed in the past five years or since January 1, 2004 in any locale. The entrant will select a category as listed below for each project. These categories will be used to sort entries for jury deliberation only and for presentation on the AIA New Mexico web site and are not used to determine the selection of winning projects.

25-Year Award: Any project completed on or before December 31, 1984, that deserves special recognition for its influence, distinctiveness and enhancement of the built environment. Eligibility for this category of awards must meet the following criteria: the building design has not been altered, exhibits its original design integrity and is still in use.
RULES
Entries must be submitted by the design architect registered with the New Mexico Board of Architectural Examiners and whose office is located in New Mexico at the time the project was executed. Where responsibility for a project is shared, the design architect must be a registered New Mexico architect. All participants who substantially contributed to the work must be credited. All projects submitted will be certified for compliance with entry rules.
AWARDS
The jury will consist of licensed architects within the AIA Western Mountain Region (WMR). The jury may select as many projects as they wish to award in the following categories:
Honor Award: the highest award is given to projects supported by all jurors. Unanimous approval by the jurors is required for this award.
Citation of Merit: this award is given to projects supported by a majority of the jurors but not deemed appropriate for an Honor Award. This award is not the equivalent of second place.
Special Recognition Award: this award can be conferred on any project for specific reasons defined by a majority of the jury.
DISCLOSURE OF WINNING PROJECTS
AIA New Mexico will notify the winners immediately after the judging. Public announcement of the winning entries will be made at the AIA New Mexico Awards Banquet to be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Hotel Albuquerque during the AIA New Mexico State Convention.
RECOGNITION
Award Certificates will be given to architects, clients and contractors for each project. All submissions will be featured on the AIA New Mexico web site. Winners will submit one 24 x 24 inch foam core presentation board at least one week prior to the awards presentation.
ENTRY REGISTRATION FEES
AIA Architects
$100 for first entry
$50 for subsequent entries
Non-AIA Architects
$150 for first entry
$80 for subsequent entries
There is no limit on how many entries an architect/firm may submit. Completed entry forms must be accompanied by the required fee payable by check, money order or credit card to AIA New Mexico, P.O. Box 16148, Albuquerque, NM 87191-6148. Entry fees are not refundable.
RETURN OF ENTRIES
CDs or DVDs will be returned only if a postage paid address label is included in the envelope with the concealed identification sheet. (Labels can be printed on the USPS web site).
ENTRY FORMAT
All entries must be submitted on a Compact Disk (CD) or Digital Video Disk (DVD) with documents and drawings in PDF format and photos in JPEG format.
The project may also be formatted as a PowerPoint presentation. If using PowerPoint, please include the JPEG images in a separate folder for AIA-NM use for program and website display.
If more than one project is on the disk, please note the name of the projects on the disk label and place each project in a separate file on the disk.

Each entry must include a text description of the program requirement and solution not to exceed 150 words.

All images should be in JPEG format and photos should be at 300 dpi resolution. For restoration and adaptive re-use projects, include at least one image describing conditions before the current work started. For the 25-Year Building Award, include at least one image taken within three years of the project’s original completion and at least one image taken recently showing theproject’s current status.
Include the Entry Form with certification and payment with the entry CDs or DVDs and the postage paid addressed return shipping label. No other identification of the architect shall be made anywhere on the entry CD or DVD. Project identification numbers will be assigned by the AIA New Mexico office.
AIA New Mexico will provide a receipt for entry fees payments to the submitting design architect.
